Quakers Split Doubleheader with Denison

RICHMOND, Ind. — The Earlham College baseball team split a North Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader with Denison University on Sunday at McBride Stadium as the Quakers celebrated senior day.
The Quakers won the opener 4-3 and the lost the second contest 12-9 in eight innings as seniors Kyle Bond (Ft. Wayne, IN/Homestead), Justin Colanese (New Carlisle, IN/New Prairie), Kyle Gallagher (Richmond, IN/Richmond) and Rob Kinne (Ft. Wayne, IN/Canterbury) played the final home games of their careers.
Kinne (1-2) was the story of game tossing a complete game victory surrendering three runs on three hits with two strikeouts. He had a one-hit shutout heading into the seventh frame.
Earlham jumped out to a 2-0 advantage in the bottom of the first on a RBI single by junior Eric Sturgeon (Logansport, IN/Logansport) and a sacrifice fly by Bond.
First-year Jake Carr (Richmond, IN/Richmond) gave the Quakers a 3-0 with a run-scoring single in the fifth and then sophomore Tilmon Clark (Winchester, IN/Winchester) doubled home a run in the sixth to make it 4-0.
Denison (16-16, 10-4 NCAC West) scored three times in the seventh, but Kinne was able to hold off the threat and give the Quakers (6-22, 1-13) their first conference victory since 2003.
Carr led the Quakers with three hits, while Gallagher and Sturgeon had two each.
For six innings in the second game, it appeared as if the Quakers might pull off a sweep. After Denison scored a run in the top of the first, Earlham took the lead with two runs in their half of the inning.
Sturgeon had a RBI single and later in the inning, he and Carr pulled off a double steal to score a run. Carr stole second, while Sturgeon swiped third and scored on a throwing error by Denison’s catcher.
Earlham went in front 4-1 in the second when first-year John Metcalf (Walton, IN/Lewis Cass) knocked in a run with a triple and Gallagher added a sacrifice fly.
After Denison added a run in the third, the Quakers scored three times in the bottom of the inning to lead 7-2. Carr and Clark had RBI singles, while Carr scored on a fielder’s choice when the Denison catcher dropped the ball attempting to tag Carr.
Sturgeon and Gallagher executed a double steal in the fourth to make it 8-2 when Gallagher swiped home on the play.
Denison started the road back and eventually took the lead 9-8 with four runs in the top of the seventh inning.
With the Quakers down by a run heading into the bottom of the seventh, sophomore Danny Bridge tied the game 9-9 with a two-out RBI single.
Denison’s offense continued to produce with the decisive three runs coming in the top of the eighth.
Gallagher and Sturgeon led Earlham with three hits apiece with Carr and Clark added two hits each.
Sophomore Kevin Greve (Farmersburg, IN/North Central) went five innings on the mound for the Quakers before being followed by sophomores Alex Anderson (Logansport, IN/Logansport) and Randy Kerns (West Manchester, OH/National Trail). Sturgeon (2-5) worked the eighth and got the loss.
The Quakers end their season with a makeup NCAC doubleheader at Wabash College on Saturday. The games were rained out earlier this season and the first contest is at 1 p.m.
