CINCINNATI, Ohio — A pair of walk-off victories highlighted the Earlham College baseball team’s appearance on Thursday night at Marge Schott Stadium on the campus of the University of Cincinnati as the Quakers swept Shawnee State University 6-5 and 15-14 in 12 innings.

In the opener, the Quakers scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh to erase a two-run deficit to pick up the victory, while the second contest went five extra frames and ended when first-year Kyle Ripperger (Richmond, IN/Richmond) singled with the bases loaded.

“It was a big day for the program because we have such a young team and we’re finding our comfort zone,” Earlham Interim Head Coach Joe Rodden said. “The talent is there and the more experience we can get in games like these the better off we are going to be. We showed a lot of character with the way we back from deficits in both games.”

Game one

First-year Andrew Morrical (Summitville, IN/Madison-Grant) singled with the bases loaded to score two of the runs to tie the contest in bottom of the seventh inning. Shawnee State right fielder Drew Howard misplayed Morrical’s hit and junior Tilmon Clark (Winchester, IN/Winchester) came home from first base with the winning run.

The Quakers started slow as Shawnee State took the lead with a pair of runs in the third inning and made it 3-0 with another tally in the top of the fourth before Earlham tied the contest in the bottom of the inning. Ripperger (Richmond, IN/Richmond) knocked in two runs with a triple and he later scored on a ground out first-year Adam Painter (Ft. Wayne, IN/Snider).

The Bears (2-7) scored single runs in the fifth and seventh to take a 5-3 lead to set the stage for Earlham’s comeback.

Junior Corey Gareri (Thorntown, IN/Western Boone) worked the final three innings on the mound for the Quakers to earn the victory in relief of first-year starter Corey Murray (Richmond, IN/Richmond). Gareri (1-0) gave up two runs on five hits with two walks and a pair of strikeouts.

Game two

The Quakers survived another rough beginning in the second game with Shawnee State scoring five runs in the first inning against Earlham junior starting pitcher Randy Kerns (West Manchester, OH/National Trail).

Earlham closed the gap in the bottom of the second inning with four runs. The Quakers loaded the bases and then got three straight singles from Painter, first-year Kyle Stauffer (Kettering, OH/Fairmont) and Clark. Morrical’s sacrifice fly made it 5-4.

The Quakers went in front 6-5 with a pair of runs in the fourth as Murray had a sacrifice fly and Ripperger had a run-scoring double. However the advantage wouldn’t last as Shawnee State added five runs in the fourth to take a 10-6 lead.

Responding with two runs in their half of the fourth, the Quakers made it 10-8. Senior Eric Sturgeon (Logansport, IN/Logansport) had a run-scoring single and sophomore Jake Carr (Richmond, IN/Richmond) finished the frame with a RBI double.

Shawnee State added a run in the top of the fifth to widen its margin to 11-8.

With four runs in the bottom of the fifth, the Quakers went back on top. Morrical got the rally started with a RBI double. Junior Alex Anderson (Logansport, IN/Logansport) knocked in a run with a single before Sturgeon’s sacrifice fly made it 11-11. Carr gave the Quakers the lead with a double.

The Bears tied the game with a run in the sixth and the game stayed that way until they scored in the eighth to take a 13-12 lead.

In the bottom of the eighth, Stauffer extended the contest with a run-scoring single with two outs.

In the 10th, the Bears scored to go ahead 14-13, but the Quakers executed a double steal with runners on first and third to send the game to the 11th. Ripperger stole second with Carr scoring the tying run.

Murray (1-1) picked up the victory on the mound for Earlham tossing the final four innings giving up one run and four hits.

Ripperger and Carr led the Quakers with five hits each in the second game, while Morrical had three hits. Anderson, Sturgeon, Painter, Stauffer and Clark had a pair of hits apiece.
