FT. PIERCE, Fla. — The Earlham College baseball team started its Florida trip by splitting a doubleheader on Tuesday with Marywood University of Pennsylvania.

After falling 4-2 in the opener, the Quakers rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh in the second contest to post a 10-9 victory at the Lawnwood Baseball Complex.

Sophomore Jake Carr (Richmond, IN/Richmond) had a two-out single with the bases loaded to score the winning run in the second game. “We’re showing a lot of character by coming back,” Earlham Interim Head Coach Joe Rodden said. “But I would like for us to play to our capability from the start of games.”

Marywood led 9-7 as the Quakers came to bat in the seventh. Earlham loaded the bases with two outs and then junior Alex Anderson (Logansport, IN/Logansport) and sophomore Ben Schuttish (San Franisco, CA/Thurgood Marshall) were walked as the Quakers tied the game 9-9 to set up Carr’s heroics.

With four runs in the second inning the Quakers got out to an early advantage. First-year Adam Painter (Ft. Wayne, IN/Snider) began the scoring with a RBI single. First-year Kyle Ripperger (Richmond, IN/Richmond) stole home as part of a double steal and Anderson finished the frame with a two-run double.

After Marywood made it 4-1 in the top of the third, junior Randy Kerns (West Manchester, OH/National Trail) singled home a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning to put the Quakers up by five.

Three-run innings in the fourth and sixth by Marywood (3-4) put the Quakers down 7-6. Carr tied the game in the sixth with a run-scoring single.

Junior Corey Gareri (Thorntown, IN/Western Boone) worked the seventh inning on the mound for the Quakers to raise his record to 2-1. Senior Eric Sturgeon (Logansport, IN/Logansport) started for the Quakers and worked five innings giving up four runs with one earned on six hits.

First-year Andrew Morrical (Summitville, IN/Madison-Grant) led off the opening contest with a home run to give the Quakers an early advantage, but Marywood responded with two runs in the second to go in front 2-1.

Sturgeon tied the game with a sacrifice fly in the fifth, but Marywood added a pair of runs in the sixth. Earlham threatened in the seventh with two runners on base, but the Quakers couldn’t score. Gareri suffered the loss for Earlham in relief of Painter, who started and went three innings.

Earlham (5-5) is back in action on Wednesday with another doubleheader in Florida. The Quakers face Delaware Valley College beginning at 8:45 a.m.
