For Immediate Release:
March 21, 2008
FT. PIERCE, Fla. — The Earlham College baseball team split another doubleheader on Friday as the Quakers beat the University of Wisconsin-Superior 2-0 in the opener at the Lawnwood Baseball Complex before falling 9-2 in the second contest.
Earlham is 3-3 in Florida this week as the Quakers have split all three twinbills on the annual journey to the Sunshine State.
Senior Eric Sturgeon (Logansport, IN/Logansport) led the way for the Quakers in the first game tossing a five-hit shutout. “Eric did everything you would want a pitcher to do,” Earlham Interim Head Coach Joe Rodden said. “This was the best outing we’ve had by a pitcher so far this season. He did a great job.”
In seven innings, Sturgeon (1-0) surrendered five singles with three strikeouts and no walks. This was the second complete game blanking in Sturgeon’s career. He threw a seven-hitter and won 2-0 at Bluffton University on April 12, 2005.
The contest was scoreless until the sixth inning when the Quakers scored twice on a double by sophomore Jake Carr (Richmond, IN/Richmond).
Junior Alex Anderson (Logansport, IN/Logansport) walked and Sturgeon followed with a single to set the table for Carr’s run-scoring hit.
Game two
Wisconsin-Superior scored a run in the top of the first of the second game against Earlham first-year starting pitcher Adam Painter (Ft. Wayne, IN/Snider), who is now 0-3 on the season. Painter worked four innings and gave up seven hits with four runs with one being earned.
Junior Danny Bridge (Logansport, IN/Lewis Cass) put the Quakers on top 2-1 with a two-run single in the second inning.
From that point however, the Yellow Jackets (6-3) scored eight times the rest of the way put the game out of reach for the Quakers.
Earlham (7-7) finishes its Florida trip on Saturday with another doubleheader. The first game against Carleton College of Minnesota starts at noon.
