FT. PIERCE, Fla. — After playing eight games in five days, the Earlham College baseball team finished its annual spring visit to Florida on Saturday by splitting a doubleheader with Carleton College of Minnesota.

Earlham won the first game 7-0 before falling 9-6 in a rain delayed finale at the Lawnwood Baseball Complex to end the trip to the Sunshine State with a 4-4 mark this week. Overall, the Quakers are 8-8. “I’m a little disappointed to be coming home at .500, but we played well and faced some great pitching,” Earlham Interim Head Coach Joe Rodden said. “We are improving and that should help us prepare for North Coast Athletic Conference play.”

The Quakers start the NCAC portion of their schedule next Saturday with a doubleheader against Wittenberg. The first game on the Earlham Baseball Field is at 1 p.m. The NCAC series with the Tigers concludes with another twinbill on Sunday, March 30.

Junior Alex Anderson (Logansport, IN/Logansport) dominated Saturday’s opener against Carleton giving up three hits, while striking out seven without walking a batter as tossed the second complete game shutout of his career. Anderson blanked SUNY-New Paltz 3-0 on March 21, 2007.

Offensively, Earlham got started in the first inning with run-scoring singles by senior Eric Sturgeon (Logansport, IN/Logansport) and first-year Corey Murray (Richmond, IN/Richmond).

In the third, sophomore Jake Carr (Richmond, IN/Richmond) made it 3-0 with a RBI single. One inning later junior Danny Bridge (Logansport, IN/Lewis Cass) knocked in a run on a fielder’s choice.

With three runs in the fifth, the Quakers built its seven-run advantage.

By that time, Anderson (2-2) had given up a single in the first. Carleton (4-6) had singles in the sixth and seventh, but couldn’t score.

Carr and Murray led the Quakers with two hits each.

Rain delay

After three innings in the second game, the Quakers appeared have a chance at a sweep. Earlham led 2-0 when a 30-minute rain delay interrupted the contest.

In the third, Anderson had a double to score a run and Carr made it 2-0 with a RBI single.

Junior starting pitcher Randy Kerns (West Manchester, OH/National Trail) cruised through three frames. However, after the rain delay Kerns (2-2) was knocked out with one out in the fifth and Carleton eventually led 7-2.

Earlham closed the gap in the sixth to 7-4 when Murray had a run-scoring double and junior Tilmon Clark hit into a fielder’s choice that produced a run.

Unfortunately for the Quakers, Carleton added two more runs to its lead in the bottom of the sixth.

Earlham threatened in the seventh, but could only come away with two runs. Carr's RBI single made it 9-5 and Murray hit a sacrifice fly for the final run of the contest.
