April 17, 2008
DAYTON, Ohio — A four-run inning proved to be too much for the Earlham College baseball team to overcome on Thursday as the Quakers dropped a 9-6 decision to Cedarville University.
The nine-inning single contest was played at Fifth Third Field, which is the home of the Dayton Dragons the Class A affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds.
The Quakers started well with a pair of runs in the first inning. First-year Andrew Morrical (Summitville, IN/Madison-Grant) had a RBI double and then first-year Corey Murray (Richmond, IN/Richmond) made it 2-0 with a sacrifice fly.
Cedarville (11-24) tied the contest with a run in the first and another in the third inning.
Senior Eric Sturgeon (Logansport, IN/Logansport) put the Quakers back on top with a two-run double in the fifth.
Unfortunately for the Quakers, Cedarville made it 4-4 in the bottom of the fifth. One frame later the Yellow Jackets added the decisive four runs to make it 8-4.
In the eighth, Morrical knocked in two more runs for Earlham with a double to close the gap to 8-6. Cedarville added the final tally in the bottom of the inning.
Morrical and junior Alex Anderson (Logansport, IN/Logansport) led the Quakers with three hits each, while first-year Kyle Stauffer (Kettering, OH/Fairmont) added a pair of hits.
