April 20, 2008
GRANVILLE, Ohio — The Earlham College baseball team finished its weekend series at Denison University with a pair of losses on Sunday.
The Quakers fell 6-3 and 9-7 to the Big Red in a North Coast Athletic Conference West Division doubleheader.
Earlham got off to a quick lead with two runs in the first inning of the opener. First-year Andrew Morrical (Summitville, IN/Madison-Grant) doubled home the initial run with senior Eric Sturgeon (Logansport, IN/Logansport) adding a single to knock in the other tally.
The lead wouldn’t last as Denison (23-12, 12-4) scored three times in the bottom of the first. The Big Red then added one run in the second and another in the third.
First-year Corey Murray (Richmond, IN/Richmond) made it 5-3 in the fourth with a run-scoring single for the Quakers, but the Big Red countered with a run in the bottom of the frame for the last score of the contest.
First-year Adam Painter (Ft. Wayne, IN/Snider) tossed a complete game for the Quakers. In six innings, Painter (3-5) gave up six runs on 12 hits. Murray and sophomore Jake Carr (Richmond, IN/Richmond) led Earlham with two hits each.
Game two
Like the first contest, the Quakers had an early advantage and led until the bottom of the fourth inning when Denison scored four times off of Earlham junior starting pitcher Alex Anderson (Logansport, IN/Logansport) to tie the game at 7-7.
One inning later, the Big Red scored the decisive run off junior reliever Corey Gareri (Thorntown, IN/Western Boone). Denison also added an unearned run in the sixth. Gareri (2-2) worked in the final two innings surrendering two runs on two hits. Anderson went four innings giving up seven runs on 10 hits. Only four of the runs were earned.
Earlham led two 2-0 after the first inning when Morrical stole home and then Sturgeon had a RBI single.
After Denison tied the game in the second, the Quakers made it 5-2 in the third. Morrical, Murray and Sturgeon all had RBI hits.
Denison scored in the bottom of the third before Earlham added a pair of runs in the fourth to take a 7-3 lead. Morrical had another run-scoring single, while Sturgeon got a run home on a fielder’s choice to set the stage for Denison’s big rally to tie the game.
Morrical led the Quakers with three hits, while Anderson, Sturgeon and first-year Kyle Stauffer (Kettering, OH/Fairmont) had two hits each.
The Quakers (13-20, 2-10) are scheduled to face Franklin College in a nine-inning game on Wednesday at McBride Stadium. The non-conference contest gets underway at 6 p.m.
