For Immediate Release:
April 24, 2008

CEDARVILLE, Ohio — The final road trip of the season for the Earlham College baseball team ended with a doubleheader loss on Thursday afternoon to Cedarville University.

The Quakers dropped the opener to the Yellow Jackets 6-2 and then fell in the second contest 12-0.

From an individual standpoint, senior Eric Sturgeon moved up on some all-time leader lists at Earlham. The records date back to 1974.

With his two doubles on the day, Sturgeon tied the career all-time hits mark with 149. Steve Pearson (2001-04) establish that standard. Sturgeon is now one double from becoming the all-time leader in that category. Derreck Parkevich (2003-06) and Bobby Ebright (1995-97) lead the way with 30.

Game one

Earlham started the first game with an early 2-0 advantage. With one out, junior Alex Anderson (Logansport, IN/Logansport) walked and sophomore Jake Carr (Richmond, IN/Richmond) singled to set up Sturgeon, who hit a double to give the Quakers their two-run lead in the first inning. Unfortunately for Earlham, the Yellow Jackets scored three times in their half of the frame to take the lead.

Cedarville added two more runs in the second and the last run in the third as the game remained scoreless the rest of the way.

In addition to the hits by Carr and Sturgeon, first-year Kyle Stauffer (Kettering, OH/Fairmont) had the other Earlham hit. Sturgeon (1-3) tossed a complete game for the Quakers giving up five earned runs on seven hits with four strikeouts.

Game two

The second game didn’t start very well for the Quakers as Cedarville scored six times in the first inning and never looked back as the Quakers were held to three hits. Carr, Sturgeon and Stauffer each had hits for the Quakers.

Junior Kevin Greve (Farmersburg, IN/North Central) went the distance on the mound in the second contest and took the loss in his first decision of the season.

Earlham (13-23) entertains Wittenberg University on Saturday at McBride Stadium. The North Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader gets underway at 1 p.m.
