Richmond Native Selected to Coach Quakers
For Immediate Release:
June 26, 2008
RICHMOND, Ind. — John Cate, a member of the Indiana Baseball Coaches Hall-of-Fame, was introduced on Thursday as the new mentor of the Earlham College baseball program.
“It was a very unique opportunity for us to fill our coaching vacancy that we could not pass up,” Earlham Athletics Director Frank Carr said. “For us to have a coach, who is a Richmond native that has been successful at all levels of baseball, is very exciting.”
Cate replaces Interim Head Coach Joe Rodden, who recently accepted a position in student services at his alma mater East Texas Baptist University.
The Quakers finished 13-27 this spring, which matched their highest victory total in a season since 1995. “I’m really pleased because John will continue the progress that we’ve made with our baseball program,” Carr said.
During the past two years, Cate was in charge of the Richmond High School program leading the Red Devils to a 30-25 record. “The timing was right,” Cate said changing the direction of his coaching career. “Division III is the most pure form of athletics. Recruiting is going to be fun.”
“This is going to be a tremendous challenge and I’m looking forward to it,” the 59-year old added. “I’ve always thought about being a college coach, but the timing was wrong. I’m energized and ready to go.”
The last two seasons with the Red Devils were part of Cate’s second stint as the head coach for RHS initially serving in that capacity from 1986-1995. He retired in 2005 from Richmond Community Schools after teaching and coaching for 33 years. Cate also worked at Wes-Del, Bellmont and Connersville high schools in Indiana.
At the high school level, Cate posted a 445-166 record including two appearances in the Final Four with Richmond in 1993 and 1995. During his career his teams won 12 sectionals, nine regionals and two semi-states. In 1995, Cate was the driving force in bringing professional baseball back to Richmond and McBride Stadium after nearly 40 years.
The Richmond Roosters played for 11 summers in the Frontier League with Cate wearing numerous hats as an investor, minority owner, director of baseball operations and field manager. Richmond is the only team in league history to win back-to-back championships when the Roosters won in 2001-02. Cate’s five-year record as a manager with the Roosters was 165-151.
