RICHMOND,
Ind. — Hot shooting in the second half helped
the Earlham College men’s basketball team start
the new year with a victory on Friday night in the Athletics
and Wellness
Center.
Earlham doubled its shooting percentage after
intermission on its way to a 75-61 win over Hiram College in a
North Coast Athletic Conference
contest. “We really stepped up in the second half and attacked
the zone with some confidence,” Earlham coach Jeff Justus said. “As
a result, we hit a higher percentage of shots.”
The Quakers made 17 or 26 attempts (65.4 percent) in the second
half after going 10 of 32 (31.3 percent) in the opening period.
Defense was another factor for the Quakers (5-7, 2-1)
in the second half as they erased a 33-29 deficit at intermission,
while out scoring the
Terriers by 18 points. “We also picked up the intensity
on the defensive end,” Justus said.
The Quakers jumped out to a 9-0 lead early in the first half, but
Hiram (2-8, 1-2) fought back and eventually held the four-point advantage
at the break. Earlham responded and took the lead for good 39-37
on a 3-pointer by junior LaRon Henry (Indianapolis, IN/Scecina) with
16:49 remaining.
Earlham widened its margin to 17 points late
in the contest behind the play of Henry and senior Brandon Miller
(Richmond, IN/Richmond). “LaRon
and Brandon Miller played well on the offensive end and Brandon did
a great job of rebounding,” Justus said.
Henry led the Quakers with 23 points. Miller
added a season-high 20 points, while grabbing 13 rebounds for his
fifth double-double
of the year. Sophomore Terrel Brown (Richmond, IN/Richmond) finished
with eight points. “I thought Terrel gave us a lift,” Justus
said.
The Quakers are back in action Saturday
against Allegheny College on Schuckman Court. The NCAC game starts
at 4 p.m.
