Men's Basketball
Conference winning streak at
three games
For Immediate Release:
Jan. 7, 2006
RICHMOND,
Ind. — The Earlham College men’s basketball
team picked up its third straight North Coast Athletic Conference
victory Saturday afternoon with a 69-53 win over Allegheny College
on Schuckman Court in the Athletics and Wellness Center.
Earlham coach Jeff Justus was pleased with the
win, which was also the third in the last four games overall. “This weekend is
always important,” he said. “At the end of the year when
you look back, the game with Allegheny in three of the last four
years has had a major impact on our seed in the NCAC Tournament.
It could definitely do that again since we only play them once. If
we beat Allegheny last year, we finish third in the conference.” Earlham
was the fifth seed in last year’s NCAC Tournament.
On Saturday, the Quakers (6-7, 3-1) had four
players in double figures with junior Markous Jewett (Richmond,
IN/Richmond) leading the way
with 16 points. First-year Tristian Gregory (Evansville, IN/Harrison)
added 15 points off the bench. “Tristian gave us a lift off
the bench and everybody else was steady,” Justus said.
Senior Brandon Miller (Richmond, IN/Richmond) scored 10 points,
while grabbing six rebounds. Junior LaRon Henry (Indianapolis, IN/Scecina)
tossed in 10 points, while senior Tyler Stewart (Richmond, IN/Richmond)
had eight points and six rebounds.
After Friday’s 75-61 win over Hiram, the Quakers had to respond
in less than 24 hours to play Allegheny. “When you come off
a game late on Friday and have to play Saturday, the key is finding
energy, especially at the defensive end” Justus said. “The
real key was going to the zone in the first half, Allegheny didn’t
shoot the ball really well.”
Both teams had early leads in the contest, but
the Quakers took the lead for good 21-20 on a basket by Miller
with 6:02 remaining
in the first half. Earlham’s advantage grew to 32-20 by intermission.
Earlham held Allegheny scoreless over the final 7:02 of the opening
period.
After Allegheny closed the gap to 32-22 with the initial basket
of the second half, Earlham never let the Gators (5-7, 1-3) get closer
as the Quakers put the contest away. A 3-pointer by sophomore Terrel
Brown (Richmond, IN/Richmond) gave the Quakers their largest lead
at 52-33 with 11:48 left in the game.
Earlham returns to action Wednesday at Wittenberg University (12-1,
4-0). The NCAC contest against the second-ranked team in the latest
d3hoops.com poll starts at 7:30 p.m.
