SPRINGFIELD, Ohio — The Earlham College men’s basketball team challenged the No. 1 team in the latest d3hoops.com poll Wednesday night, but the Quakers fell short as Wittenberg University came away with 74-57 North Coast Athletic Conference win at HPER Center.

Despite losing the rebounding battle 40-28, Earlham still managed to keep it close early in the game. A steal and a dunk by senior Brandon Miller (Richmond, IN/Richmond) put the Quakers up 15-14 with 11:51 in the first half. “We got a lot more ball pressure in the first half,” Miller said. “We were also more aggressive and got in their faces.”

The Tigers closed the first half with an 11-2 run over the last 6:33 to make the halftime score 33-23.

Earlham’s 3-point shooting (3-of-7) and free throw shooting (4-of-5) in the first half prevented Wittenberg from getting too far ahead, however, the hot streak from behind the arch ended in the second half as the Quakers made three out of 10 attempts.

As a result, Wittenberg began the second half with a 7-2 run and led by 40-25 with 16:12 remaining in the contest. The Tigers upped their lead to 55-34 with 9:15 remaining, but a 3-pointer by First-year Tristian Gregory (Evansville, IN/Harrison) started the Quakers back. Two Miller free throws and a jumper by Markous Jewett (Richmond, IN/Richmond) cut the lead to 68-55 with 2:14 left. The Tiger would end with a 6-2 run to post the victory.

Overall, the Quakers struggled from the field making 17-of-53 shots for 32.1 percent, while Wittenberg was more efficient at 56.6 percent nailing 30-of-53 attempts. “They are one of the best defensive field goal percentage teams in the country and they had two 6-9 guys that made it tough,” Earlham coach Jeff Justus said of the Tigers (13-1, 4-1). “We also added to our struggles by taking some quick shots.”

Miller led the Quakers with 15 points and nine rebounds. Also contributing offensively for Earlham was junior LaRon Henry (Indianapolis, IN/Scecina) and Gregory, who each scored 12 points. Jewett added 11 points, while sophomore Nick Welsh (Muncie, IN/Wes-Del) grabbed five rebounds.

The Quakers (6-8, 3-2) return to action again on Saturday at Ohio Wesleyan University. The NCAC contest starts at 3 p.m. Box score.
