Down by 85-81 with 32 seconds remaining in the extra session, first-year Neil Collins (Ft. Wayne, IN/North) hit the second biggest trey of the day for the Quakers to cut the lead to one.

The Quakers fouled Ohio Wesleyan’s Andy Warnock with nine seconds left. He missed the second of two free throws to enable Stewart (Richmond, IN/Richmond) to nail what he considers the biggest shot of his career. “When Neil Collins penetrated and got the ball out to me, I knew I would be taking the last shot,” Stewart said. “I was so excited when I hit it, I ran off the court before the officials could change their minds.”

Earlham head coach Jeff Justus was elated with the win over the Bishops (10-5, 5-1). “It certainly helps," he said. "But we still have to take care of business at home and take it game-by-game.”

The North Coast Athletic Conference contest was a close the entire way with 15 lead changes. Offensively, the Quakers (7-8, 4-2) had success early with senior Brandon Miller (Richmond, IN/Richmond), who had the team’s first eight points of the game. “I got the ball in scoring position,” Miller said. “We called some ball screens and my teammates were passing me the ball.”

Miller finished with a team-high 28 points, 12 rebounds, five steals and four assists. Most of his points came from the free throw line where he made 16-of-21. Both totals from the free throw line established records by any player in Branch Rickey Arena.

Success in the paint told the story for the rest of the contest. “We talked about getting the ball inside,” Justus said. “They are pretty talented but not very tall.”

Miller and junior Markous Jewett (Richmond, IN/Richmond) scored at will with the latter finishing with 21 points and four rebounds.

After exchanging baskets and being down by as many as eight in the first half, sophomore Nick Welsh (Muncie, IN/Wes-Del) hit one of two free throws for the Quakers with 11 seconds left to cut the deficit to 48-43 at halftime.

LaRon Henry (Indianapolis, IN/Scecina) finished with 19 points including a dunk at the 5:14 mark of the second half, which put the momentum in Earlham's favor. “Brandon Miller got a steal and tipped it to Terrel Brown (Richmond, IN/Richmond), who tipped it to me and I finished with finesse,” Henry said. “Our bench stood up and was cheering and it put us in the lead and motivating us to play better.”

With 1:53 remaining in regulation, Miller fouled out. “When I fouled out, I knew LaRon and Markous were playing well," Miller said. "I knew we were going to win.”

Jewett hit a lay-up to tie the game at 75-75 with 56 seconds remaining sending the game into overtime where he had six more points to set up Stewart’s dramatic moment.

Earlham returns to action Wednesday against Wabash College on Schuckman Court in the Athletics and Wellness Center. The NCAC game begins at 7:30 p.m. Box score.
