prevail over Wabash in NCAC battle;
Brandon Miller moves up on all-time scoring list
For Immediate Release:
Jan. 18, 2006
RICHMOND,
Ind. — Offensive
efficiency and 3-point shooting propelled the Earlham
College
men’s basketball
team to a 71-59 victory over Wabash College on Schuckman
Court in the Athletics
and Wellness Center.
Earlham coach Jeff Justus was pleased
with his team’s
effort in the North Coast Athletic Conference contest. “We
knew they would take away the inside,” he said. “I
told our players to be ready to light it up from outside.”
It was the third straight time the Quakers
(8-8, 5-2) have defeated Wabash (10-6, 4-3) after sweeping
the Little
Giants last season. Earlham is tied for third place in
the NCAC with Ohio Wesleyan University with the Quakers
currently holding an edge in the tiebreaker after a win
in Delaware, Ohio on Jan. 14.
The Quakers were very effective from
the floor making 30-of-55 (54.5 percent) and 8-of-15
(53.3 percent) from
3-point range. First-year Tristian Gregory (Evansville,
IN/Harrison) finished the game with 13 points going 3-of-5
from long range. “We work hard on our shooting and
our offense in practice,” Gregory said.
It was, however, senior Brandon Miller
(Richmond, IN/Richmond) who had the biggest night for
the Quakers leading the way
with 22 points, 12 rebounds, three assists and three steals).
Miller also moved up to 13th on Earlham’s all-time
scoring as he surpassed Ken Stewart with a lay-up at the
19:18 mark in the second half. Stewart played from 1966-70
and finished his career with 1,272 points. Miller has 1,282
points and is now 26 behind Greg Williams (1984-88). “It’s
taken a lot of coaching and hard work in the weight room,” Miller
said of his individual success.
Earlham started the game by going
inside and having success getting to the basket with
Miller and LaRon Henry (Indianapolis,
IN/Scecina) who finished with 11 points. “I try to
keep the team motivated,” Henry said. “I know
how well we shoot and we expect to do better than that
every game.”
After demonstrating prowess in the paint, the Quakers
began dialing long distance as sophomore Neil Collins (Ft.
Wayne, IN/North) hit a pair of 3-pointers in the final
three minutes of the first half giving the Quakers a 33-31
lead at intermission. Collins ended the night with 10 points.
After Wabash tied the game 39-39 with 14:48 remaining
in the game, Earlham went on an 8-0 run capped by a 3-pointer
from senior Tyler Stewart (Richmond, IN/Richmond) at the
12:31 mark. Wabash would cut the lead to six briefly before
sophomore Terrel Brown (Richmond, IN/Richmond) hit a long
trey to put the Quakers in front 50-41 with 11:38 left.
A steady dose of Miller and Gregory in the second half,
along with a lay-up by Henry at the 1:33 mark sealed the
victory for the Quakers.
Earlham will be at Oberlin College
for its next NCAC contest on Saturday. The NCAC game
begins at 3 p.m. just after
the Earlham women’s basketball team opens the doubleheader
against the Yeowomen at 1 p.m. Box score.
