OBERLIN,
Ohio — Despite playing a tight
first half on Saturday, the Earlham College men’s
basketball squad eventually pulled away from Oberlin
College to earn an 82-63 North Coast Athletic Conference
victory.
The win was the third in a row for the Quakers
(9-8, 6-2) and the fifth in their last six contests. “We didn’t guard
very well in the first half,” Earlham coach Jeff Justus said. “We
responded and played a very good second half.”
The victory by the men’s team gave Earlham a sweep of Oberlin
on Saturday as the women’s squad also won 87-55. “Anytime
you can go on the road that far from home and get two wins it’s
pretty good,” Justus said.
Senior Brandon Miller (Richmond, IN/Richmond)
led the Quakers with 26 points and junior Markous Jewett (Richmond,
IN/Richmond)
tossed in 25 points. Both had nine rebounds, while Miller had six
steals. “Brandon and Markous were difficult matchups for
them.”
Junior LaRon Henry (Indianapolis, IN/Scecina) and first-year Tristian
Gregory (Evansville, IN/Harrison) added 10 points each.
Miller’s effort moved him into a tie for 12th place on Earlham’s
all-time scoring list. Miller and Greg Williams (1984-88) have
1,308 points.
Jewett and Henry are also getting closer to joining
Miller in the 1,000-point club. Jewett has 949 points, while
Henry has 920.
Earlham started out with a 17-6 advantage by the 15:02 mark of
the first half before Oberlin (0-16, 0-8) closed the gap to
two points on several occasions. The Quakers eventually led 40-34
at halftime.
In the second half, the Quakers quickly worked their to a double
figure lead with the biggest margin of 28 points coming late in
the contest.
The Quakers return to action Wednesday against Denison
University on Schuckman Court in the Athletics and Wellness Center.
The NCAC
game starts at 7:30 p.m. Box score.
