RICHMOND,
Ind. — Despite having four players in
double figures Wednesday night, the Earlham College men’s
basketball team dropped a 72-66 decision to Denison University
in a North Coast Athletic Conference
contest on Schuckman Court in the Athletics and Wellness Center.
The loss, which ended Earlham’s three-game winning streak,
left the Quakers at 9-9 overall and 6-3 in the conference. “Denison
came ready to play,” Earlham coach Jeff Justus said. “We
didn’t respond to their physical defensive play.”
Junior LaRon Henry (Indianapolis, IN/Scecina) led the Quakers
with 17 points, while senior Brandon Miller (Richmond, IN/Richmond)
had 16 points and a team-high 11 rebounds. Junior Markous Jewett
(Richmond, IN/Richmond) added 15 points and first-year Tristian
Gregory (Evansville, IN/Harrison) tossed in 10 points.
Earlham led for most of the contest holding a nine-point advantage
on several occasions in the first half. The Quakers were in front
31-25 at intermission.
Denison (9-9, 5-4) closed the gap in the second half and took
the lead for good 51-50 with 7:39 remaining. The Big Red pulled
away from there as the Quakers trailed by as much as eight points
in the final moments of the contest.
Miller moved into 11th place on Earlham’s
career scoring list with 1,324 points. With his first basket
of the game, Miller
broke the tie for 12th place with Greg Williams (1984-88). Later
in the contest, he passed Matt Hall (1993-97), who has 1,321 points.
Miller is 28 points from reaching 10th place occupied by Bryan
Clements (1987-91) with 1,352 points.
With their efforts on Wednesday, Jewett (964 points) and Henry
(937 points) remain on pace to join the 1,000-point club later
this season.
Earlham is on the road Saturday at Wooster. The
NCAC game starts at 1 p.m. Box score.
