Defense gives Quakers edge to beat
Kenyon For Immediate Release:
Feb. 4, 2006
RICHMOND, Ind. — A
scoring run over eight minutes made the difference for the Earlham
College
men’s
basketball team Saturday afternoon as the Quakers defeated Kenyon
College
70-60 on Schuckman Court
in the Athletics and Wellness Center. Earlham put together a 16-8 run in the final
four minutes of the opening period and the first four minutes of
the second half to create
some distance between the Quakers and their North Coast Athletic
Conference foe. “I thought we played good defense for a stretch
at the end of the first half and at the beginning of the second,
which was the difference in the game,” Earlham coach Jeff Justus
said.
Senior Brandon Miller (Richmond, IN/Richmond) led the Quakers with
20 points, 13 rebounds and four assists. Junior LaRon Henry (Indianapolis,
IN/Scecina) tossed in 12 points, while senior Tyler Stewart (Richmond,
IN/Richmond) and sophomore Neil Collins (Ft. Wayne, IN/North) added
10 points each. Senior Joe Rihm (Beech Grove, IN/Beech Grove) contributed
seven points.
The Lords (6-15, 3-9) led early before Rihm
gave the Quakers their first lead at 17-16 at the 11:20 mark of
the first half. “Kenyon
can be hard to guard because they are very good at driving and dishing,” Justus
said. “At times we didn’t respond well to that, but we
had a real pickup off the bench from (sophomore) Terrell Brown (Richmond,
IN/Richmond) and Joe Rihm played well.”
An 8-4 run at the end of the first half gave Earlham
a 34-28 lead at intermission. With an identical run to start the
second half,
the Quakers were in front 42-32. Earlham eventually worked its way
to a 52-36 advantage with 9:58 left after a basket by junior Markous
Jewett (Richmond, IN/Richmond), who finished with six points.
Kenyon fought back to close the gap to 65-58
with 1:43 remaining, but the Lords couldn’t get any closer.
Miller and Henry each made a pair of free throws in the final moments
of the contest to
put the game away.
Miller now has 1,380 points in his career and
is 10th on Earlham’s
all-time scoring list. Jewett (982) and Henry (961) moved closer
to the 1,000-point plateau.
Next up for Earlham (10-11, 7-5) is a visit to Wabash
College on Wednesday. The NCAC game begins at 7:30 p.m. Box score.
