Quakers Play Second Overtime
Game In Four Days
For Immediate Release:
Feb. 11, 2006
RICHMOND,
Ind. — One inch appeared to be the difference
Saturday as the Earlham College basketball team battled Ohio
Wesleyan University on Schuckman Court in the Athletics and
Wellness Center.
Sophomore Terrel Brown (Richmond, In/Richmond)
hit a controversial jumper with three seconds remaining in overtime.
With seven seconds
left, an inbounds pass was poked away and Brown pulled up for what
appeared to be a 3-point shot. It was ruled that his foot was on
the line and it was counted as a two-point basket as the Quakers
lost 78-77. “Turnovers and not guarding the 3-point line
is what caused the outcome,” Earlham coach Jeff Justus said. “We
had a good day individually, but not as a team. The tape (of
the final shot) was inconclusive.”
Junior LaRon Henry (Indianapolis, IN/Scecina)
led the Quakers in scoring finishing with 21 points, five rebounds
and making all
four of his 3-pointers. Senior Brandon Miller (Richmond, IN/Richmond)
had 12 points, 15 rebounds, six assists, two steals and two blocks. “LaRon
has been struggling a little but now he’s back on track and
Brandon made some good decisions,” Justus said.
It was evident this game would go back and forth the entire contest.
Markous Jewett (Richmond, IN/Richmond) hit a jumper at the 4:19
mark in the first half to tie the game for the sixth time. Earlham
would then go on a 9-2 run with a lay-up by Tristian Gregory (Evansville,
IN/Harrison) for a halftime lead of 32-25.
The Quakers would stretch their advantage to 46-29 at the 15:37
mark in the second half. A bench clearing substitution by Ohio
Wesleyan head coach Mike DeWitt began to swing the momentum. The
Bishops cut the lead to 46-37 at the 13:08 mark completing a run
of eight straight points.
Earlham led 62-53 at the 4:09 mark in the second half. Ohio Wesleyan
outscored the Quakers 13-3 from that point to tie the game at 65-65
and send it into overtime. The extra period began with the Bishops
(15-8, 10-4) opening a five-point lead with 1:20 left. Henry nailed
his fourth three-point basket of the contest with 1:01 remaining.
Ohio Wesleyan’s lead was back to 78-72 with 17 seconds left.
Gregory 3-pointer with 10 seconds left to cut the lead in half
and make it 78-75 to set the stage for Brown’s nearly heroic
effort.
Miller surpassed former teammate Nathan Stoops
(1999-2003) on Earlham’s all-time scoring list. Miller
now has 1,405 points in his career and is 21 points behind Terry
Scott (1981-85) who
has 1,426.
Jewett and Henry joined the 1,000-point club. Jewett finished
with 10 points and 10 rebounds and he has 1,004 points. Henry now
has 1,005 points.
Gregory was the fourth Quaker to score in double figures finishing
with 11. Neil Collins contributed nine points, three steals and
three assists.
The Quakers (10-13, 7-7) return to action on Wednesday
as they travel to Denison University. The NCAC contest begins at
7:30 p.m. Box score.
