For Immediate Release:
Feb. 15, 2006
GRANVILLE,
Ohio — Needing a victory for an opportunity
to host an opening round game of the upcoming North Coast Athletic
Conference Tournament,
the
Earlham College men’s basketball team came through on Wednesday
night.
The Quakers defeated Denison University 80-59
in Livingston Gymnasium. “The
guys knew we had to win to have a chance at home court for the
first round of the NCAC Tournament,” Earlham coach Jeff Justus
said. “We took care of our end, but unfortunately Wabash
beat Wittenberg.”
Earlham’s hopes of having a first round
contest on Schuckman Court diminished as Wabash upset Wittenberg
51-46 to stay in fourth
place and keep the Quakers (11-13, 8-7) in fifth in the NCAC standings.
Junior LaRon Henry (Indianapolis, IN/Scecina)
led the Quakers with 24 points, while making six shot behind
the 3-point line. First-year Tristian Gregory (Evansville,
IN/Harrison) tossed in 13. “LaRon had a great shooting night
and Tristian gave us a big lift off the bench,” Justus said.
Junior Markous Jewett (Richmond, IN/Richmond) scored 11 points
and senior Brandon Miller (Richmond, IN/Richmond) added 10 points,
eight rebounds and five assists. Senior Tyler Stewart (Richmond,
IN/Richmond) had eight points.
Henry moved into 22nd place on Earlham's
all-time scoring list with 1,029 points. Jewett is tied for 23rd with Bill
Baker (1961-65) with 1,015 points.
Earlham never trailed in the contest although it was tight early
and last tied at 8-8 with 15:03 left in the opening period. The
Quakers scored the next eight points to led 16-8 after Henry nailed
a 3-pointer with 11:52 remaining. The Big Red (10-14, 6-9) closed
the cap to 28-23 at the 5:19 mark, but the Quaker end the half
with 16-6 run to hold a 44-29 advantage at intermission.
Denison started the second half
with an 8-2 run to cut Earlham’s
lead to 46-37 when the Quakers called a timeout with 18:03 left
in the game. A pair of treys helped the Quakers regain their advantage.
Stewart hit his bomb after the timeout, while Henry scored on his
jumper after an exchange of turnovers to give the Quakers a 52-37
lead with 16:44 left.
Over the remainder of the second half the Quakers opened a 24-point
lead to stay in command of the contest.
Earlham returns to action Saturday against
Oberlin College. The NCAC contest begins at 3 p.m. at home following
the women’s game with Oberlin
that starts at 1 p.m. Box score.
