Men's Basketball
Quakers
Fall in NCAC Semifinals to Wooster
For Immediate Release:
Feb. 24, 2006
WOOSTER,
Ohio — There was a hint of a possible upset in
the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament Friday night,
but instead the Earlham College
men’s basketball team had its season come to an end.
Nationally third-ranked Wooster defeated the
Quakers 84-74 in Timken Gymnasium in the semifinal round of the
conference tourney. “Wooster
is one of the best teams in the country and we played them toe-to-toe,” Earlham
coach Jeff Justus said. “It’s a five-point game with
eight minutes to go and they just made a few more shots than us.”
Senior Brandon Miller (Richmond, IN/Richmond)
led Earlham with 22 points and eight rebounds as the Quakers had
five players in double
figures. “We came out and really competed,” Justus said. “I
was proud of our effort.”
Earlham finished 27-of-60 (45 percent) from
the floor for the contest, while Wooster was 30-of-58 (51.7 percent). “I thought we had
better shots than Wooster did, but we came up short on some of them,” Justus
said.
Junior LaRon Henry (Indianapolis, IN/Scecina)
added 18 points for the Quakers with 16 coming after intermission. “In the second
half, Brandon and especially LaRon were effective shooting the ball,” Justus
said.
Junior Markous Jewett (Richmond, IN/Richmond)
tossed in 10 points, while coming off the bench sophomore Terrel
Brown (Richmond, IN/Richmond)
contributed 12 points and first-year Tristian Gregory (Evansville,
IN/Harrison) had 10. “We got a great left with Terrel and Tristian
knocking down shots and Terrel had a good defensive effort,” Justus
said.
Although Wooster had a 13-point advantage during the first half,
the Quakers (13-14) fought back to close the cap to 39-30 at halftime.
In the second half, Wooster (25-2) pulled way
by as much as 17 points with 11:38 left in the game before the
Quakers rallied. A basket
by Gregory made it 65-60 with 8:18 remaining. Earlham continued to
battle, but the Quakers couldn’t get any closer.
Saturday marked the final time that senior Tyler
Stewart (Richmond, IN/Richmond), Miller and Jewett would suit up
together after over
a decade as teammates. “I’m sorry to see Tyler, Brandon
and possibly Markous playing in their last game,” Justus said. “It’s
been a really fast four years and I’ve enjoyed watching them
grow as people and players.”
Jewett, who has a year of eligibility left, is on
track to graduate and may not return next season. It was also the
last game for senior Bronson Lickliter (Indianapolis,
IN/Park Tudor).
Miller ends his career in seventh place on Earlham’s
all-time scoring list with 1,471 points. Henry and Jewett are also
in the
1,000-point club. Henry has 1,075 points, while Jewett has 1,066.
Box score.
