SWARTHMORE, Pa. — Four players in double figures led a balanced attack for the Earlham College men’s basketball team as the Quakers defeated Swarthmore College 85-65 on Friday night in the opening round of the Equinox Classic in Tarble Pavilion.

Ten of Earlham’s dozen players scored with senior Tyler Stewart (Richmond, IN/Richmond) and junior Markous Jewett (Richmond, IN/Richmond) leading the Quakers with 17 points each. Junior LaRon Henry (Indianapolis, IN/Scecina) tossed in 13 points, while sophomore Nick Welsh (Muncie, IN/Wes-Del) added 12. Stewart made all five of his 3-point attempts. “Tyler Stewart gave us big lift with his 3-point shooting,” Earlham coach Jeff Justus said.

Senior Brandon Miller (Richmond, IN/Richmond), an All-North Coast Athletic Conference First Team performer in 2004-05 and last year’s leading scorer, had five points and pulled down a team-high seven rebounds and dished out four assists. “Our nine of 16 performance on 3-pointers was a direct result of our players, especially Brandon Miller, recognizing the double teams and finding the open man,” Justus said.

Turnovers were a concern early in the contest as the Quakers had miscues on their first five possessions and trailed 4-0 at the 17:26 mark. Henry’s basket at 17:10 got the Quakers started offensively. The teams swapped leads, but the Quakers went in ahead for good 23-20 on a 3-pointer by first-year Tristian Gregory (Evansville, IN/Harrison), who finished with nine points.

Earlham led 42-31 at intermission and expanded its advantage to as much as 24 points the rest of the way. Swarthmore never got closer than 12 points in the second half.

The Quakers (1-0) face Haverford College at 1 p.m. on Saturday as the event moves to Haverford for the inaugural contest in the Calvin J. Gooding Arena. Haverford defeated Ohio Wesleyan 78-66 in the first game on Saturday. Swarthmore and Ohio Wesleyan meet at 3 p.m. to finish the back-to-back doubleheaders. Box score.
