Second half effort gives Quakers another
victory For Immediate Release:
November 19, 2005
HAVERFORD,
Pa. — A strong second half performance on Saturday
afternoon gave the Earlham College men’s basketball
team a 68-54 victory over Haverford College in the Equinox Classic.
It was the second straight win for the Quakers,
who start the season at 2-0 for the first time since 2002-03. “It’s great
to come away with two victories, but we also have a lot of improvement
to make with rebounding and taking care of the basketball.” Earlham
coach Jeff Justus said.
Although the Quakers out rebounded Haverford
36-35, they lost the battle on the boards in Friday’s victory
over Swarthmore 42-32. Earlham also committed 35 turnovers in the
two games.
Junior Markous Jewett (Richmond, IN/Richmond)
scored 25 points and pulled down eight rebounds as the Quakers
spoiled the inaugural contest
in Haverford’s Calvin J. Gooding Arena. “After a rocky
first half where we battled foul trouble and diverted away from our
game plan, we executed better in the second half and pulled away,” Justus
said.
Senior Brandon Miller (Richmond, IN/Richmond) had 18 points for
the Quakers and led the squad with nine rebounds. Both Jewett and
Miller were named to the all-tournament team. Junior LaRon Henry
(Indianapolis, IN/Scecina) added 11 points and six rebounds.
Earlham jumped out to an early 10-0 advantage in the first four
minutes of the contest, but Haverford fought back to tie the contest
at 28-28 by intermission. Dispite scoring the initial basket of the
second half, the Quakers fell behind 34-31 at the 16:25 mark. A pair
of free throws sophomore Nick Welsh (Muncie, IN/Wes-Del) at 15:23
gave the Quakers a 35-34 lead, which they would not relinquish. The
Quakers then scored the next 13 points to take command 48-34.
The Quakers continue their travels on Tuesday as they
visit Bluffton University. The non-conference game starts at 7:30
p.m. Box score.
