Quakers fall short in first home contest For Immediate Release:
Nov. 30, 2005
RICHMOND,
Ind. — Missed opportunities at the free throw
line proved to be problem for the Earlham College men’s
basketball team Wednesday night as the Quakers were defeated
66-54 by the College of Mount St. Joseph on Schuckman Court in
the Athletics and Wellness Center.
In addition to the missed free throws, the Quakers
also had trouble locating the Lions’ 3-point shooters. “They are a very
good team” head coach Jeff Justus said. “We executed
well enough to win, but we missed some shots and some free throws
and we didn’t find their 3-point shooters as well as we should
have.”
Mount St. Joseph (4-1) had eight 3-pointers and converted on 12
of 14 attempts from the free throw line.
Senior Brandon Miller (Richmond, IN/Richmond) led the Quakers with
16 points and nine rebounds. Junior Markous Jewett (Richmond, IN/Richmond)
added 10 points, while junior LaRon Henry (Indianapolis, IN/Scecina)
and sophomore Nick Welsh (Muncie, IN/Wes-Del) tossed in six points
each. Welsh also had six rebounds and four blocks.
First-year guard Tristian Gregory (Evansville,
IN/Harrison) noted the team was 5 of 14 from the charity stripe. “If
we make free throws and get key rebounds, this game would have
been ours,” said
Gregory, who came off the bench to contribute nine points and three
steals. “We have bigger games coming up and we won’t
let this one be our downfall.”
The Lions led 37-31 at halftime. After being down
by as many as 11 points in the second half, a layup by Gregory ignited
a 10-0
run to close the gap to 52-51 with 8:04 remaining in the game. Mount
St. Joseph (4-1), however, widened its margin late in the contest
and maintained its advantage the rest of the way.
The Quakers (2-2) will be back in action on Saturday
as they play host to the College of Wooster. The North Coast Athletic
Conference
contest begins at 1 p.m. Box
score.
