Men's Basketball
Quakers face another ranked squad
For Immediate Release:
Dec. 7, 2005
HANOVER,
Ind. — Too many turnovers by the Earlham men’s
basketball team and Hanover College’s balanced scoring
attack were the keys Wednesday night as the Panthers defeated
the Quakers 62-53 in a fast-paced contest at Collier Arena.
Earlham coach Jeff Justus was expecting a difficult
match up against the No. 13 Panthers, who were ranked eighth last
week by D3hoops.com. “They
have a winning tradition and are a tough team,” he said. “We
didn’t respond to their defensive intensity.”
Senior Tyler Stewart (Richmond, IN/Richmond) continued
his excellent 3-point shooting making two of three attempts behind
the
arch finishing
with 12 points. “I
don’t think about it,” Stewart said of his long-range
connections. “I just try to relax and jump and shoot.”
For Stewart, however, his shooting wasn’t enough and he agreed
with his coach. “We didn’t play with that much intensity
or enthusiasm,” he said “We got out worked.”
Although fouls were a problem early, Earlham stayed with four points
up to the 3:33 mark in the first half. Hanover went on a 7-2 run
to close up the period with a 32-23 lead at intermission.
After halftime, Hanover stretched its lead to 50-35 at the 8:31
mark of the second period. First-year Tristian Gregory (Evansville,
IN/Harrison) and junior LaRon Henry (Indianapolis, IN/Scecina)
kept Earlham in the
game
and combining for 17 points in the second half. Henry finished
with
12 points,
while
Gregory
tossed in seven.
With his 11 points, senior Brandon Miller (Richmond,
IN/Richmond) moved into 17th place on the Earlham
all-time scoring list 1,106 points. Junior
Markous
Jewett (Richmond, IN/Richmond) added nine points and a team-high
seven rebounds.
Earlham (2-4) is back on the road on Saturday
at Kenyon College. The North Coast Athletic Conference game starts
at 3 p.m. Box score.
