Earlham falls in Mutchner Cup battle
For Immediate Release:
Dec. 15, 2005
TERRE HAUTE,
Ind. — The Earlham College men’s basketball
squad faced state rival Rose-Hulman on Thursday night in the
sixth annual John
Mutchner Cup contest.
The Engineers tied the series with their third
win after a 67-59 victory over the Quakers in Hulbert Arena. “I felt Rose-Hulman
played very physical and with intensity,” Earlham coach Jeff
Justus said. “We were unable to match it. They executed their
game plan well and made us guard them for the 35 seconds of the shot
clock.”
Junior LaRon Henry (Indianapolis, IN/Scecina) led the Quakers with
22 points, and junior Markous Jewett (Richmond, IN/Richmond) tossed
in 14 points. Senior Brandon Miller (Richmond, IN/Richmond) led Earlham
with seven rebounds, while scoring nine points. Senior Tyler Stewart
(Richmond, IN/Richmond) had eight points.
Rose-Hulman started the contest with a 9-4 advantage
that eventually disappeared as the Quakers had an 8-point run to
take a 12-9 lead
with 11:49 remaining in the first half. Jewett’s 3-pointer
at the 7:34 mark gave the Quakers a 17-15 lead. The Engineers led
27-24 at intermission.
In the second half, Rose-Hulman (4-6) widened its
margin, but the Quakers battled back to tie the game at 41-41 on
a basket
by first-year Tristian Gregory
(Evansville, IN/Harrison) with 14:19 left. The Engineers regained
their advantage and led the rest of the way, as the Quakers could
not get closer than 53-50 at the 6:16 mark.
The Mutchner Cup honors the longtime now retired coach of the Engineers,
who is also an Earlham graduate and member of the Earlham Athletics
Hall of Fame.
Earlham (3-5) entertains Franklin College on Monday in the Athletics
and Wellness Center. The non-conference game begins at 7:30
p.m on Schuckman Court. Box score.
