For Immediate Release:
Dec. 19, 2005
RICHMOND,
Ind. — A second half comeback gave the Earlham
College men’s basketball
team a chance on Monday night, but the Quakers fell short in
overtime despite a career-high 33-point outing from junior LaRon
Henry.
Franklin College defeated the Quakers 91-88
on Schuckman Court in the Athletics and Wellness Center. “We were a totally different
team in the second half,” Earlham coach Jeff Justus said. “It’s
a shame we wasted that effort.”
Earlham was behind most of the first half and
by as much as 12 points before trailing 37-28 at intermission.
Henry (Indianapolis, IN/Scecina)
led the charge in the second half and extra session with 30 points. “LaRon
had a tremendous night at the offensive end,” Justus said.
Before Monday's outburst, Henry's best scoring effort
was 28 points in an 89-68 victory at Oberlin College on Dec. 4, 2004.
The Quakers began the road back and took the lead
54-53 at 10:17 mark of the second half. With 4:55 remaining in regulation,
the game
was tied 68-68. Over the next two minutes, Earlham went on an 11-2
run to take a 79-70 lead with 2:03 remaining.
Franklin (8-1) eventually sent the contest into overtime scoring
with 11 seconds left. In the extra period, the Quakers worked their
way to an 85-81 advantage with 3:05 left. From that point, however,
Franklin scored 10 straight points to put the game away.
Along with Henry, senior Brandon Miller (Richmond,
IN/Richmond) and junior Markous Jewett (Richmond, IN/Richmond) both
scored in
double figures after halftime. Jewett finished with 21 points for
the game including 12 over the final 25 minutes. Miller added 19
points with 10 after the halftime break. Miller also led the Quakers
with
11 rebounds.
Earlham (3-6) returns to action on Wednesday against DePauw University
(4-4). The non-conference contest begins at 2:30 p.m. at Conseco
Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.
