INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — A pair of free throws and a blocked shot was all the Earlham College men’s basketball team needed to celebrate on the floor of Conseco Fieldhouse on Wednesday afternoon.

Senior Brandon Miller (Richmond, IN/Richmond) nailed the two charity tosses with nine seconds remaining in overtime to give the Quakers a 90-87 victory over DePauw University at the home of the National Basketball Association’s Indiana Pacers.

“After coming here and always wondering what it was like to be on that court, it was the opportunity of a lifetime,” Miller said. “I wasn’t even thinking about the free throws. It was just automatic. I had made six in a row. I felt like I had something to do with us losing to Franklin on Monday and I wanted to ice the game and get it over with.”

Earlham junior Markous Jewett (Richmond, IN/Richmond) blocked Mike Moore’s 3-point attempt as the Tigers
(4-5) looked to send the game to another overtime. “One of the last things we talked about at practice on Tuesday was the history of this building and how we didn’t want to let anyone down. We wanted to represent Earlham well and I felt like we played hard and did that.”

With the score knotted at 70-70, Jewett hit a trey to start the overtime. The Tigers followed with a 3-pointer to tie it at 73-73. Moments later Jewett made the first of two free throws. When Jewett missed the second attempt sophomore Nick Welsh (Muncie, IN/Wes-Del) helped the cause for the Quakers with a rebound basket on the play to put the Quakers in front 76-73 with 4:09 remaining.

The Quakers (4-6) would never trail again as they built a six-point lead midway through the extra period. “It was a great experience for the team, the coaches and our fans,” Earlham coach Jeff Justus said. “Early in the game, we had some guys who were so excited they might have been hyperventilating a little. Overall, we shot the ball well and we shot free throws well. In the second half, we executed well.”

Jewett was one of five Quakers to finish in double figures as he led Earlham with 22 points and nine rebounds. Miller, who made all eight of his free throws, and junior LaRon Henry (Indianapolis, IN/Scecina) tossed in 18 points each. “I was very excited,” Henry said of retuning to his hometown. “I played here once before in a high school all star game. It was even more exciting this time especially after getting a big win like this.”

Sophomore Neil Collins (Ft. Wayne, IN/North) added 12 points for the Quakers, while first-year Tristian Gregory (Evansville, IN/Harrison) contributed 11 points off the bench.

The contest was close throughout the first half with both teams holding advantages. DePauw eventually led 34-29 at intermission. The second half was the same as the teams exchanged leads. A 3-pointer by DePauw with nine seconds on the clock in regulation tied the game at 70-70 and set the stage for the extra session.

Earlham is back in action on Dec. 28 at Wilmington College. The non-conference contest begins at 4 p.m. Box score.
