Quakers Fall in Final Seconds
For Immediate Release:
Jan. 6, 2007
HIRAM, Ohio — A second half rally came up short for the Earlham College men’s basketball team Saturday afternoon as the Quakers fell 67-65 to Hiram College in North Coast Athletic Conference action.
A jumper with one second remaining by Hiram’s Ian Pfouts proved to be the difference. The game was tied 65-65 with 9.9 seconds on the game clock and 2 seconds on the shot clock. The Quakers forced Michael McDevitt to miss a shot, but an offensive rebound by Mike Staley set up Pfouts for the winning score.
Earlham called timeout after the basket to set up a final play. Senior Markous Jewett (Richmond, IN/Richmond) threw the ball the length of the floor and the Quakers never got a shot as time expired.
Senior LaRon Henry (Indianapolis, IN/Scecina) led the Quakers with 18 points. Junior Nick Welsh (Muncie, IN/Wes-Del) added 17 points with a game-high 11 rebounds and seven blocks. All three numbers were career highs for Welsh as he recorded his first collegiate double-double.
Earlham led very early, but the Quakers struggled most of the first half as Hiram (3-9, 2-1) built a 36-23 advantage at intermission.
In the second period, the Quakers responded to the challenge and eventually tied the contest 65-65 on a 3-pointer by Henry with 2:37 left.
Both teams had opportunities to take the lead but neither squad could score until Pfouts hit the decisive basket.
The Quakers (4-9, 2-2) return home on Wednesday against Wittenberg University. The NCAC contest starts at 7:30 p.m.
