RICHMOND, Ind. — A career-high 31 points from senior Markous Jewett wasn’t enough on Wednesday as the Earlham College men’s basketball team fell 71-60 to No. 8 Wittenberg University on Schuckman Court in the Athletics and Wellness Center.

Earlham Head Coach Jeff Justus was pleased with Jewett (Richmond, IN/Richmond), who moved into 13th place on the all-time scoring list. “He was shooting the ball well,” Justus said. “A 13-for-18 from the field against one of the best defensive teams in the country is an outstanding performance.”

Jewett now has 1,312 points to move past Greg Williams (1984-88) who had 1,308 in his career.

The Quakers kept the game tight through out the contest against one of the top squads in the North Coast Athletic Conference and the nation according to D3hoops.com. “We executed,” Justus said. “Most of the time our players did what we asked them to do. I’m proud of the way they played. This performance would had would have beaten a lot of teams.”

In addition to Jewett's effort, the Quakers got 14 points from sophomore Tristian Gregory (Evansville, IN/Harrison), while junior Nick Welsh (Muncie, IN/Wes-Del) tossed in seven points and grabbed a team-high six rebounds.

With the Quakers leading 22-21 after Welsh scored at the 6:09 mark of the first half, the Tigers (12-2, 4-1) went on an 11-2 run to gain a 32-24 advantage with 2:37 remaining in the period. Jewett nailed a pair of jumpers to close the gap to 32-38 by halftime.

In the second half, Gregory hit two free throws to make it 32-31 at 17:59, but the Quakers couldn't get any closer as Wittenberg eventually led by as many as 19 late in the contest.

The Quakers (4-10, 2-3) face Ohio Wesleyan University at home on Saturday. The NCAC contest begins at 3 p.m.
