Jan. 13, 2007
RICHMOND, Ind. — Close games are becoming a way of life for the Earlham College men’s basketball team with five of the last six games decided by three points or less.
The latest installment was a 68-65 win over North Coast Athletic Conference foe Ohio Wesleyan University on Schuckman Court in the Athletics and Wellness Center as the Bishops missed a shot at the final buzzer. “It was a great team effort and a lot of guys contributed in a big way,” Earlham Head Coach Jeff Justus said. “Ohio Wesleyan is one of the best teams in the league.”
Senior Markous Jewett (Richmond, IN/Richmond) led the Quakers with 22 points, while classmate LaRon Henry (Indianapolis, IN/Scecina) added 19 points. “They stepped up and scored,” Justus said. “Markous hit a bunch of free throws and LaRon shot the ball really well and knocked down some big ones for us.”
Jewett made 10-of-11 free throws for the game and all seven of his attempts in the second half. Henry scored 13 of his points in the final 20 minutes. The senior duo also moved up the Earlham all-time scoring list as well. Jewett is now 12th with 1,334 points, while Henry is tied for 15th with Ken Stewart (1966-70) with 1,273 points.
Earlham struggled early defensively as the Bishops led 12-6 with 14:55 remaining in the opening half after Ben Chojnacki nailed his fourth straight 3-pointer.
The Quakers eventually fought back to lead 20-17 when Henry hit a trey with 8:58 left. Earlham maintained its edge and led 34-28 at intermission despite a game-high 24-point performance by Chojnacki, who made all nine of his shots in the first half.
Even though Chojnacki would be scoreless in the second half, missing a 3-point try on his only shot of the period, the Bishops (10-5, 4-2) stayed close. Ohio Wesleyan put together a 10-2 run to lead 38-36 with 16:36 left in the game.
Henry’s 3-pointer at the 15:52 mark gave the Quakers the lead at 39-38. Another 3-pointer by Henry at 11:18 put Earlham in front 50-41, but Ohio Wesleyan fought back to lead 56-55 with 5:42 left.
Jewett’s jumper on the next possession gave the Quakers the lead for good at 57-56 with 5:25 on the clock.
The game was tight the rest of the way and the Bishops were within one when Jewett made a pair of free throws with 7.8 seconds remaining to put Earlham ahead 68-65. The Bishops missed a 3-point attempt as time ran out.
Junior Nick Welsh (Muncie, IN/Wes-Del) and sophomore Tristian Gregory (Evansville, IN/Harrison) contributed nine points each, while junior Neil Collins (Ft. Wayne, IN/North) added six points, six rebounds and six assists.
The Quakers (5-10, 3-3) play at Wabash College on Wednesday before entertaining Oberlin College next Saturday. The NCAC contest at Wabash is at 7:30 p.m., while the Community Day conference game starts at 3 p.m.
