Jan. 20, 2007
RICHMOND, Ind. — The Earlham College men’s basketball team broke open a close contest midway through the first half Saturday as the Quakers posted a 76-59 victory over Oberlin College in North Coast Athletic Conference action on Schuckman Court in the Athletics and Wellness Center.
Earlham trailed 9-8 with 12:48 left in the first half when the Quakers went on a 13-2 run that ended with a basket by junior Nick Welsh (Muncie, IN/Wes-Del) with 8:40 remaining. “We had good ball movement and went inside-outside a lot,” Earlham Head Coach Jeff Justus said. “We had good patience in the first half.”
The patience paid dividends as the Quakers made all but one of their seven 3-point attempts in the first half and 10-of-15 for the game. “They were good shots for us,” Justus said. “Those are the 3-pointers that you practice during your shooting drills.”
By intermission, the Quakers built a 39-21 advantage over the Yeomen (3-14, 2-6) thanks to a 13-of-21 shooting performance from the field in the opening period.
In the second half, Earlham widened the gap to 22 points on two occasions, while Oberlin could only get to within 10 points twice with the last time coming at the 6:42 mark when the Quakers led 59-49. Earlham finished with a 17-10 run to put the game away.
Senior Markous Jewett (Richmond, IN/Richmond) led the Quakers with 28 points and eight rebounds. Jewett moved into 11th place on Earlham’s scoring list with 1,373 points passing Bryan Clements (1987-91), who had 1,352.
Sophomore Tristian Gregory (Evansville, IN/Harrison) matched his career-high 22-point performance that he had against Anderson University earlier this season. Gregory also had five assists. Welsh tossed in 12 points, while pulling down six rebounds.
The Quakers (6-11, 4-4) visit Denison University on Wednesday. The NCAC contest begins at 7:30 p.m.• Box Score
