Jewett, Henry lead Quakers to NCAC Road Win

GRANVILLE, Ohio — Earlham College senior Markous Jewett scored the first eight points for the Quakers on Wednesday as he led the men’s basketball team to an 80-60 victory over Denison University.
Jewett (Richmond, IN/Richmond) gave the Quakers an 8-2 advantage with 16:34 remaining in the opening period. “Markous got off to a great start and carried us early and then it was a total team effort after that,” Earlham Head Coach Jeff Justus said.
Despite the fast start, Denison the North Coast Athletic Conference contest was tied at 8-8 and then 10-10 at the 14:34 mark before the Quakers put together a 21-5 run to go in front 31-15 with 8:53 remaining in the first half. “LaRon Henry stepped up offensively as well and we got a good effort on down the line from everyone,” Justus said.
Earlham led 48-37 at intermission and Denison could get no closer than 51-41 early in the second period as the Quakers put the game out of reach with their widest margin of 71-47 coming with 5:46 left.
Justus complemented his team’s perimeter play and contribution from the reserves. “Our guards really picked up the defense in the second half,” he said. “We also had a big lift from the bench.”
Jewett had 24 points for the Quakers to give him 1,397 for his career. He is now three points from tying former teammate Nathan Stoops (1999-2003) for 10th place on Earlham’s scoring list with 1,400 points.
Henry (Indianapolis, IN/Scecina) tossed in 18 points to tie Greg Williams (1984-88) for 14th place on the scoring list with 1,308 points. The senior also had a team-high seven rebounds.
Junior Neil Collins (Ft. Wayne, IN/North) added 10 points, while junior Nick Welsh (Muncie, IN/Wes-Del) had nine points. Welsh and Jewett each grabbed six rebounds.
Junior Terrel Brown (Richmond, IN/Richmond) and sophomore Tristian Gregory (Evansville, IN/Harrison) had four assists each.
The Quakers (7-11, 5-4) entertain Wooster on Saturday. The NCAC contest begins at 3 p.m. on Schuckman Court in the Athletics and Wellness Center.
