Quakers Battle No. 3 Wooster

For Immediate Release:

RICHMOND, Ind. — Eight minutes proved to be the difference Saturday as the Earlham College men’s basketball team fell 64-51 to the College of Wooster on Schuckman Court in the Athletics and Wellness Center.

Ranked No. 3 in the latest D3hoops.com poll, Wooster broke open a tight game in the second half with 11 straight points to take command of the North Coast Athletic Conference contest. “We had trouble getting it in the hole,” Earlham Head Coach Jeff Justus said. “Wooster is a great shooting team. They’re definitely a national contender. I thought our kids were up for the game and they were focused.”

Earlham led 32-29 after senior Markous Jewett (Richmond, IN/Richmond) nailed a free throw to complete a 3-point play with 19:20 left in the game, but that was the offense for the Quakers until senior LaRon Henry (Indianapolis, IN/Scecina) made a pair of free throws at the 11:47 mark to end Wooster’s 11-point run. “We just had that bad stretch at the beginning of the second half,” Justus said. “We got a little careless with the basketball in the second half. You know they’re going to go on a short run, you just hope it’s not big.”

Trailing 40-34 after Henry’s free throws, the Quakers could never recover as Wooster (17-2, 1-0) widened its margin and put the game out of reach.

Despite a slow start, the Quakers led most of the opening period. “We controlled the tempo pretty well in the first half,” Justus said. “After the first few minutes, we didn’t turn it over much and I thought that was a key.”

Earlham was in front by as much as eight points in the first half, but needed a 3-pointer at the buzzer by junior Terrel Brown (Richmond, IN/Richmond) to lead 29-27 at intermission to set the stage for the defining moments of the second period.

Jewett led the Quakers with 24 points and seven rebounds. The effort moved him into 10th place on Earlham’s scoring list with 1,421 points. He passed former teammate Nathan Stoops (1999-2003) who had 1,400 points in his career.

Henry managed just two points, but he moved into 14th place on Earlham’s scoring list with 1,310 points to break a tie with Greg Williams (1984-88) who had 1,308.

Sophomore Tristian Gregory (Evansville, IN/Harrison) added 10 points and three assists.

The Quakers (7-12, 5-5) visit Wittenberg University on Wednesday. The NCAC contest begins at 7:30 p.m.
