Feb. 7, 2007
RICHMOND, Ind. — Free throws made the difference as the Earlham College men’s basketball team picked up a 72-70 win Wednesday night over Wabash College on Schuckman Court in the Athletics and Wellness Center.
Earlham was 25-of-35 from the line, but more importantly the Quakers made 7-of-8 in the final moments to put the game away. “The biggest thing was our guys stepped up and made free throws,” Earlham Head Coach Jeff Justus said. “We took the ball to the basket pretty well and got to the foul line.”
The score was tied 65-65 when senior LaRon Henry (Indianapolis, IN/Scecina) made a pair of charity tosses to give the Quakers the lead for good. After that, Henry made two more free throws and classmate Markous Jewett (Richmond, IN/Richmond) nailed three of his four attempts.
With all but three points coming in the second half, Jewett had 24 points and six rebounds to lead Earlham in the North Coast Athletic Conference victory. “It was an important win because we’re right in the middle of the pack with three games left,” Justus said.
Sophomore Tristian Gregory (Evansville, IN/Harrison) tossed in 17 points, while grabbing six rebounds. Junior Nick Welsh (Muncie, IN/Wes-Del) added 13 points with five rebounds and three blocks.
Wabash built an 18-9 lead by the 9:04 mark of the opening stanza, but a 3-pointer by Gregory at the end of the period cut the deficit to 32-30 by intermission. “It was really big,” Justus said. “For us to only be down by two points, we felt extremely fortunate and it was a big boost.”
The Little Giants (9-13, 6-7) continued to hold their advantage until Jewett tied the game for the seventh time at 59-59 on a 3-pointer with 5:17 remaining. Jewett gave the Quakers the upper hand 61-59 with 4:30 left before Wabash knotted the contest again at 65-65 to set up Earlham’s free throw success in the final moments.
The Quakers (8-14, 6-7) visit Ohio Wesleyan University on Saturday. The NCAC contest begins at 3 p.m.
