Quakers Open Season Against DePauw

CHICAGO, Ill. — A late rally fell short on Saturday night as the Earlham College men’s basketball team opened the season with an 85-80 loss to DePauw University in the Midway Classic at the University of Chicago.

Earlham trailed by as many as 16 points with the last time coming with 9:46 left in the contest at 65-49. The Quakers closed the cap with a pair of free throws from senior LaRon Henry (Indianapolis, IN/Scecina) to 75-74 with 3:12 remaining.

The Tigers (1-0) quickly countered the run by Earlham and outscored the Quakers 10-6 the rest of the way.

Earlham had several leads early in the game with the last coming when senior Markous Jewett (Richmond, IN/Richmond) hit a pair of free throws to make it 18-16 at 11:32 of the first half. DePauw countered with a 3-pointer to go in front for good at 11:05.

The game remained close as DePauw led 42-38 at halftime before the build their advantage in the second half.

Jewett led the Quakers with a career-high 30 points to go along with 10 rebounds and four assists. Junior Nick Welsh (Muncie, IN/Wes-Del) and sophomore Tristian Gregory (Evansville,IN/Harrison) both recorded career best scoring efforts with 16 points each. Welsh also grabbed seven rebounds and had two blocks.

Jewett and Henry continued their journey up the Earlham all-time scoring list. Jewett now has 1,096 points in 21st place just one point behind Jim Coulter (1952-56). Saturday he moved past Doug Lower (1969-73), who has 1,085 points, and Henry.

Henry has 1,081 points and is four points from 22nd place behind Lower. Because Jewett passed him, Henry dropped from 22nd to 23rd on the list.

The Quakers (0-1) play in the consolation contest of the Midway Classic on Sunday afternoon against the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. The game begins at 2 p.m. Box Score.
