Quakers Finish Weekend in Chicago

CHICAGO, Ill. — The Earlham College men’s basketball team dropped its second straight contest with a 70-57 loss Sunday afternoon to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in the Midway Classic at the University of Chicago.
Senior Markous Jewett (Richmond, IN/Richmond) led the Quakers with 23 points, eight rebounds and four blocks. Senior LaRon Henry (Indianapolis, IN/Scecina) finished with 15 points.
For the weekend, Jewett had 53 points, 18 rebounds, five assists and four blocks to make the all-tournament team. Jewett also moved up three positions on the Earlham all-time scoring list to 18th with 1,119 points. Henry is now in 22nd place in school history with 1,096 points after passing Doug Lower (1969-73), who has 1,085.
Earlham led early in the contest with its widest margin of 22-13 coming at 7:29 of the first half on Henry basket. Three minutes later, the Coast Guard tied the contest 24-24. From that point, the Bears built a 35-31 halftime advantage.
In the second half, the Quakers closed the cap to 41-40 after Jewett’s 3-pointer with 14:57 remaining. By the 9:48 mark, the Bears responded to take a 53-45 lead.
The Quakers scored the next eight points to tie the contest 53-53 with 6:57 left in the game. The Bears took command after that ending with a 17-4 run.
Earlham (0-2) entertains Bluffton University on Tuesday in the home opener for the Quakers. The non-conference affair begins at 7:30 p.m. Box Score.
