RICHMOND, Ind. — The final nine minutes determined the outcome of Tuesday night’s home opener for the Earlham College men’s basketball team as the Quakers lost 81-68 to Bluffton University on Schuckman Court in the Athletics and Wellness Center.

Bluffton finished with a 27-14 run to put the contest away. “We didn’t take good care of the basketball a couple of times and we lost our men when they made cuts in the post,” Earlham Head Coach Jeff Justus said. “They are a well coached team and we didn’t respond to that. Most of their shots came on our mistakes and I told the guys we just have to get more fundamentally sound.”

Sophomore Tristian Gregory (Evansville,IN/Harrison) led the Quakers with a career-high 18 points. Senior LaRon Henry (Indianapolis, IN/Scecina) added 13 points, while senior Markous Jewett (Richmond, IN/Richmond) tossed in 12 points with seven rebounds. Junior Nick Welsh (Muncie, IN/Wes-Del) had 11 points and five rebounds.

Both teams held early leads and the contest was tied four times in the first four minutes before the Quakers gained a small advantage. Gregory and Jewett hit back-to-back 3-pointers two give Earlham a 14-10 lead at the 13:52 mark of the opening half.

The Quakers eventually led 19-12 after a 3-pointer by junior Neil Collins (Ft. Wayne, IN/North) with 8:15 left before intermission. Bluffton (2-1) came back grab the lead and the Beavers were in front 37-31 by halftime.

The Beavers held their lead early in the second half, but Henry put the Quakers in front with a trey with 15:20 left in the game.
