Free Throws Help Quakers Pick Up Third Straight Win

FRANKLIN, Ind. — Late free throws proved to be the difference on Saturday as the Earlham College men’s basketball team won its third straight game with a 71-66 victory over Franklin College.

Earlham trailed 56-55 with 4:28 remaining in the contest as senior Markous Jewett (Richmond, IN/Richmond) stepped to the free-throw line. Jewett made both attempts giving the Quakers the lead for good.

Including Jewett’s tosses, the Quakers made 10-of-12 free throws to put the game away during a decisive 16-10 run. For the afternoon, the Quakers were 21-of-25 (84 percent) from the free-throw line. “We took the ball right at them,” Earlham Head Coach Jeff Justus said.

Over the last two contests, Earlham has made 44-of-50 (88 percent) shots from the charity stripe.  

Earlham’s shooting excellence on Saturday wasn’t just at the free-throw line as the Quakers were 15-of-19 (79 percent) from the field in the second half. For the game, Earlham was 24-of-37 (65 percent) from the field. “It was a good win for us,” Justus said.

One of four players in double figures, Jewett led the Quakers with 20 points and nine rebounds, while senior LaRon Henry (Indianapolis, IN/Scecina) added 17 points, five rebounds and three assists.

Sophomore Tristian Gregory (Evansville, IN/Harrison) had 13 points with junior Neil Collins (Ft. Wayne, IN/North) tossing in 11 points. Junior Nick Welsh (Muncie, IN/Wes-Del) finished with eight points and five rebounds.

The contest was tight through out opening half with Franklin (3-5) leading by as much as seven points with the final time coming at 2:13 with the Grizzlies in front 26-19. Earlham scored the last six points of the period to cut the deficit to 26-25 at intermission.

In the second half, there were several ties before Franklin pulled ahead 46-41 with 10:52 left to play. The Quakers bounced back and led briefly 50-49 after a basket by Jewett at 7:54.

Over the next three minutes, Franklin held a slight advantage before Jewett’s free throws gave the Quakers the lead for good at 57-56 with 4:28 left.

Earlham (3-5) plays at Anderson University on Monday. The non-conference contest starts at 7:30 p.m.
