WASHINGTON, Pa. — A basket in the final moments on Wednesday ended the hopes of the Earlham College men’s basketball team as Muskingum defeated the Quakers 61-59 in the opener of the third annual Hilton Gardens Inn/Jacksons Classic at Washington & Jefferson College.

After trailing the entire contest, senior Markous Jewett (Richmond, IN/Richmond) tied the game 59-59 by scoring a basket with 34 seconds left, but the Quakers would never get a chance to go for the victory.

Muskingum called two timeouts before Brandon Todd, who scored 18 points, nailed the game-winner just before the final buzzer.

Jewett finished with 23 points, while junior Nick Welsh (Muncie, IN/Wes-Del) tossed in 15 points. Welsh, junior Neil Collins (Ft. Wayne, IN/North) and sophomore Tristian Gregory (Evansville, IN/Harrison) pulled down four rebounds each. Senior LaRon Henry (Indianapolis, IN/Scecina) added six points and four assists.

Earlham fell behind 10-0 to start the game and eventually trailed by as much as 15 points before finishing the first half with six straight points to close the gap to 31-22.

In the second half, the Quakers remained within striking distance as they continued to rally allowing Jewett to tie the game in the last minute setting the stage for Todd’s basket.

The Quakers (3-7) play Washington & Jefferson (1-10) in the consolation game on Thursday. The contest begins at 6 p.m. Muskingum (5-4) meets Manchester College (8-2) in the championship at 8 p.m.

Manchester beat Washington & Jefferson 59-57 with the decisive basket coming with 2.4 seconds remaining.
