Quakers Miss Last Chance in Consolation Game

WASHINGTON, Pa. — The Earlham College men’s basketball team added another tough loss to its resume on Thursday night as the Quakers lost 62-60 to host Washington & Jefferson College in the consolation game of the Hilton Gardens Inn/Jacksons Classic.
Trailing by two with 23 seconds left, Earlham sent Washington & Jefferson to the free-throw line for a one-and-one. After the miss, junior Terrel Brown (Richmond, IN/Richmond) missed a 3-pointer with seven seconds left and time eventually ran out on the Quakers.
Senior LaRon Henry (Indianapolis, IN/Scecina) and sophomore Tristian Gregory (Evansville, IN/Harrison) led the Quakers with 17 points each.
Senior Markous Jewett (Richmond, IN/Richmond) added 14 points, while finishing with a team-high eight rebounds. Jewett earned a spot on the all-tournament team after scoring 23 points in Wednesday’s 61-59 buzzer-beating loss to Muskingum College.
Junior Nick Welsh (Muncie, IN/Wes-Del) tossed in 10 points with junior Neil Collins (Ft. Wayne, IN/North) contributing six rebounds and four assists.
The Presidents (2-10) jumped out to a 23-10 lead at the 12:08 mark of the opening half. Earlham responded with 15 straight points to go in front 25-23 with 5:57 left in the first period. The Quakers finished the half with a 34-31 advantage.
Earlham built a 45-37 lead after a 3-pointer by Henry at 17:57. The Presidents bounced back to tie the contest 45-45 with 13:02 remaining.
Later in the half, the Presidents built a 62-56 lead. Jewett’s two free throws with 35 seconds left pulled Earlham to within 62-60 to set up the final scenario that ended with a the Quakers missing 3-pointer.
The Quakers (3-8) are idle until 2007 when they visit North Coast Athletic Conference foe Allegheny College on Friday, Jan. 5. The contest begins at 8 p.m.
