Last-Second Shot Attempt Doesn't Fall
For Immediate Release:
Feb. 2, 2008
OBERLIN, Ohio — A last-second shot attempt by Earlham sophomore Justin Carter was just short as the Quakers fell 65-64 to Oberlin College on Saturday in a North Coast Athletic Conference game.
With the Quakers trailing by one with six seconds remaining in the contest, Carter (Indianapolis, IN/Northwest) went the length of the floor and missed a highly contested 8-foot attempt that would have won the game at the buzzer.
Oberlin (4-15, 3-7) had taken the lead with eight seconds remaining before both teams called timeouts to set up the final play.
Senior Nick Welsh (Muncie, IN/Wes-Del) led the Quakers with 17 points and 10 rebounds for his second double-double of the season.
Junior Tristian Gregory (Evansville, IN/Harrison) finished with 12 points, while sophomore Tarrell Berry (Indianapolis, IN/Northwest) tossed in nine points. Senior Neil Collins (Ft. Wayne, IN/North) ended the contest with eight points and Carter had seven.
The Quakers began the day with a 5-0 lead and eventually went on top 8-5 before Oberlin rallied to score the next 10 points to go in front 15-8 with 14:55 left in the opening period.
Later in the half, Earlham responded with a run of 10 straight points of its own to build a 32-26 advantage with 4:35 left. It was tight the rest of the way and the Quakers led 41-37 at intermission.
In the second half, Oberlin scored the first five points to take a 42-41 lead by the 19:08 mark and the game stayed close with the final result unknown until the last shot.
Next up for the Quakers (2-17, 0-10) is a trip to Wittenberg University on Wednesday. The NCAC contest begins at 7:30 p.m. Box score.
