Gregory Leads Quakers to NCAC Win

For Immediate Release:
Feb. 9, 2008

RICHMOND, Ind. — Junior Tristian Gregory made sure the game was over Saturday.

Earlham College trailed Kenyon College by two points with 14 seconds left to play when Gregory (Evansville, IN/Harrison) and Earlham Head Coach Jeff Justus decided during a timeout that they wanted to end the contest.

Gregory promptly drilled a 3-pointer with 5.8 seconds remaining to give the Quakers a 64-63 North Coast Athletic Conference victory. “That was a good play for man-to-man defense,” Gregory said of the dribble handoff move he and senior Neil Collins (Ft. Wayne, IN/North) executed right in front of Earlham’s bench. “Kenyon did not switch defensively and Neil gave me enough room to shoot.”

Kenyon junior Bryan Yelvington, who led the Lords with 17 points, missed a 3-point attempt at the buzzer that would have changed the outcome for the Quakers. “I’m really proud of the guys,” Justus said. “This was the best efforts we’ve had for an entire game all year.”

Gregory, who led the Quakers with 32 points, agreed with his coach. “We’ve been playing hard the whole season, but not for 40 minutes every game.” he said. “This is one of the few times we’ve put together a full 40 minutes and it paid off.”

First-year Mark Yost (Lenox, MA/Lee) was the other Earlham player in double digits with 12 points. Senior Nick Welsh (Muncie, IN/Wes-Del) scored nine points, while sophomore Tarrell Berry (Indianapolis, IN/Northwest) added eight points and led the Quakers with seven rebounds.

Both teams had small leads and there were eight ties in the first half before Gregory scored to give the Quakers a 35-33 advantage at intermission.

Early the second half, Kenyon had a 10-3 run to build a 43-38 lead at the 16:26 mark. A few moments later Gregory hit back-to-back treys to put Earlham on top 46-43 with 12:44 remaining.

The Lords responded with another run to go in front 55-50 with 5:12 on the clock. Earlham closed the gap and the next time the Quakers led was after Gregory’s game-winning basket.

The Quakers (3-18, 1-11) visit Wabash College on Wednesday. The NCAC contest gets underway at 7:30 p.m. Box score.
