Nov. 25, 2007
N. MANCHESTER, Ind. — Despite career-high numbers from senior Nick Welsh on Sunday afternoon, the Earlham College men’s basketball team fell 84-67 at Manchester College.
Welsh (Muncie, IN/Wes-Del) led the Quakers with 29 points and 11 rebounds. He topped his 23-point effort at Oberlin College last season, while matching his rebound total at Hiram College from a year ago.
Junior Tristian Gregory (Evansville, IN/Harrison) was the other Quaker in double figures with 18 points. Senior Neil Collins (Ft. Wayne, IN/North) tossed eight points and senior Terrel Brown (Richmond, IN/Richmond) finished with six assists.
The Quakers led early in the contest with the largest margin of 26-15 coming after Welsh hit a shot at the 7:41 mark of the first half. However from that point, Manchester scored 13 straight points to take the lead. The Spartans would eventually be in front 33-32 at intermission.
In the second half, Earlham tied the game 39-39 on a basket by sophomore Tarrell Berry (Indianapolis, IN/Northwest) with 16:28 remaining in the contest. Unfortunately for the Quakers, Manchester worked its way to a 63-53 advantage with 9:06 left to play before putting the game away late in the half.
Earlham (2-1) travels to St. Louis to participate in the 24th annual Lopata Classic at Washington University on Friday and Saturday. The Quakers face the host school Friday at 9 p.m. On Saturday, Earlham plays either Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges or Babson College at 7 or 9 p.m. Box score.
