Quakers Fall in First Round of Washington Tournament

ST. LOUIS, Mo. — The Earlham College men’s basketball team opened the 24th annual Lopata Classic on Friday with a 94-64 loss to No. 8 Washington University.
Senior Nick Welsh (Muncie, IN/Wes-Del) led the Quakers with 22 points with all but two of them coming in the second half. Junior Tristian Gregory (Evansville, IN/Harrison) finished with 18 points. Sophomore Tarrell Berry (Indianapolis, IN/Northwest) led Earlham with six rebounds.
The Quakers (2-2) started the night with some success behind the 3-point line early in the contest to grab a 9-7 advantage with 14:23 left in the first half. Gregory hit the first two treys, while senior Terrel Brown (Richmond, IN/Richmond) gave the Quakers the lead with the other 3-pointer.
Washington (4-2) went on a 10-0 run tying the game at 9-9 and then building a 17-9 lead with 12:03 remaining in the opening period.
Later in the half, a 3-pointer by sophomore Malick Keita (Bamako, Mali/Lycee Francais Liberte) cut the Earlham deficit to 27-21 at the 6:57 mark, but the Bears eventually worked their way to a 44-25 lead by intermission.
The Bears widened the gap in the second half and put the game away.
Earlham plays in the consolation game of the tournament on Saturday against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges at 7 p.m. The Stags (3-2) lost their first round contest on Friday to Babson College 60-47. Box score.
