Dec. 1, 2007
ST. LOUIS, Mo. — The Earlham College men’s basketball team struggled to find some offense on Saturday as the Quakers fell 60-47 to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges in the consolation game of the 24th annual Lopata Classic at Washington University.
Senior Nick Welsh (Muncie, IN/Wes-Del) led the Quakers with 21 points, which put him on the all-tournament team. Welsh had 22 points in Friday’s game against Washington.
Junior Tristian Gregory (Evansville, IN/Harrison) was the only other Quaker in double figures finishing with 14 points. Sophomore Tarrell Berry (Indianapolis, IN/Northwest) led Earlham with 10 rebounds.
After Earlham had a brief 3-2 lead in the first minute of the contest, the Quakers fell behind and had to fight back to tie the game 17-17 when Gregory scored at the 4:15 mark.
The game was tied two more times before Welsh hit a free throw to give the Quakers a 22-21 advantage with 1:12 remaining in the first half. The Stags scored the last five points of the period to lead 26-22 at intermission.
In the second half, the Quakers closed the gap to four points twice with the last coming at 17:06. The Stags went on a 10-0 run from that point to lead 40-26 with 12:32 left to play and the Quakers were unable to get any closer.
The Quakers (2-3) face Oberlin College in their homer opener next Saturday. The North Coast Athletic Conference game on Schuckman Court in the Athletics and Wellness Center starts at 3 p.m.
