Quakers Play Oberlin in Home Opener
For Immediate Release:
Dec. 8, 2007
RICHMOND, Ind. — Shooting woes plagued the Earlham College men’s basketball team Saturday afternoon as the Quakers fell 68-59 to Oberlin College 76-54 in a North Coast Athletic Conference game on Schuckman Court in the Athletics and Wellness Center.
The Quakers finished 17-of-54 from the floor including 4-of-15 from beyond the 3-point line. Perhaps the biggest problem was a 7-of-20 performance from the free throw line in the first half. “We struggled with our free throws, but we all have to do a better job of giving a better effort on and off the floor,” Earlham Head Coach Jeff Justus said.
Earlham scored the first two baskets of the opening half, but Oberlin responded and led by as many as 10 points before holding a 32-28 advantage at intermission.
Both teams started slow offensively in the second half, but a basket by senior Nick Welsh (Muncie, IN/Wes-Del) gave the Quakers a 34-32 lead with 14:30 remaining in the contest.
The teams battled to a 40-40 tie at the 9:31 mark of the second half before the Yeomen scored 13 straight points to go in front 53-40 with 3:34 left. Earlham close the gap to 62-59 with 21 seconds remaining, but the Quakers couldn’t get any closer.
Welsh finished with 22 points, seven rounds and three assists, while junior Tristian Gregory (Evansville, IN/Harrison) and first-year Mark Yost (Lenox, MA/Lee) tossed in 14 points each. Gregory led the Quakers with nine rebounds.
Earlham (2-4, 0-1) entertains Anderson University on Thursday. The non-conference affair begins at 7:30 p.m. Box score.
