Quakers Fall to Anderson
69-62
For Immediate Release:
Dec. 13, 2007
RICHMOND, Ind. — A nearly five minute stretch without a field goal at the end of the game Thursday night was the difference as the Earlham College men’s basketball team dropped a 69-62 decision to Anderson University on Schuckman Court in the Athletics and Wellness Center.
Earlham led 60-58 after senior Neil Collins (Ft. Wayne, IN/North) hit a 3-pointer with 4:53 remaining in the contest, but that was the final field goal for the Quakers as the Ravens finished with an 11-2 run.
“We quit executing offensively,” Earlham Head Coach Jeff Justus said. “They were really helping out on (senior) Nick Welsh defensively and when we had quick ball reversals we got good shots.”
The good shots were falling early as the Quakers built a 12-5 lead when senior Terrel Brown (Richmond, IN/Richmond) nailed a 3-pointer with 14:26 to go in the opening half. The Ravens fought back to grab a brief advantage, but the game remained tight and it was tied 28-28 at intermission.
In the second half, the Quakers started well again working their way to a 41-32 lead at the 17:07 mark when junior Tristian Gregory (Evansville, IN/Harrison) hit a trey.
Anderson had to climb back into the contest and the Ravens eventually tied to game at 45-45 with 10:43 left. “We made some mental errors and let them back in the game,” Justus said. “We should have been able to handle the pressure a little bit better than we did.”
With the score tied at 51-51, the Ravens scored seven straight before the Quakers rallied with nine points in a row. The 3-pointer by Collins proved to be Earlham’s last basket and set the stage for the Ravens to put the game away.
Gregory led the Quakers with 17 points, while Welsh (Muncie, IN/Wes-Del) tossed in 12. Sophomore Tarrell Berry (Indianapolis, IN/Northwest) grabbed a career-high 17 rebounds. Berry’s total was the most since Brandon Miller pulled down 19 rebounds at Oberlin College on Dec. 4, 2004. The Earlham record of 25 was set by Ken Stewart at Anderson on Feb. 7, 1969.
Earlham (2-5) is at Rose-Hulman on Saturday. The non-conference contest gets underway at 3 p.m. Box score.
