TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — The Earlham College men’s basketball team had a second half lead slip away on Saturday afternoon as the Quakers fell 58-48 to the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in the annual battle for the Mutchner Cup.

Since its inception in 2000, the series is tied 4-4 in games played for the trophy named for John Mutchner. Mutchner was inducted into the Earlham Athletics Hall of Fame in 1998 and coached at Rose-Hulman for 25 years. Overall, Earlham has a 53-40 advantage in the series that began in 1905.

On Saturday, the Quakers led 39-27 when sophomore Tarrell Berry (Indianapolis, IN/Northwest) scored with 11:30 remaining in the contest. From that point however, the Engineers (3-6) picked up some momentum and eventually tied the game at 41-41 with 8:51 left to play.

Rose-Hulman added a 3-pointer at 7:34 to finish the 17-2 run to go in front for good at 44-41. The Engineers remained in command and built an 11-point advantage in the final moments of the game

Junior Tristian Gregory (Evansville, IN/Harrison) led the Quakers with 24 points, while senior Neil Collins (Ft. Wayne, IN/North) added eight points.

Senior Nick Welsh (Muncie, IN/Wes-Del) tossed in seven points and grabbed five rebounds. Berry contributed six points and topped the Quakers with eight rebounds.

Slow Start

After falling behind early in the contest, Earlham trailed 18-5 midway through the first half before the Quakers rallied and Welsh scored with 42 seconds left to tie the game 20-20. One possession later, Gregory drilled a 3-pointer just before the buzzer to give Earlham a 23-20 edge at intermission.

In the second half, Earlham started by out scoring Rose-Hulman 16-7 to build a 12-point advantage before the Engineers put together their decisive stretch over the last 11:30 of the contest.

Earlham (2-6) returns to action in the Franklin Tournament on Friday Dec. 28. The Quakers face Franklin at 8 p.m. Box score.
