Franklin Defeats Quakers in Tournament

FRANKLIN, Ind. — The Earlham College men’s basketball team opened the Goaltenders-Bankers Classic on Friday night with a 70-58 loss to Franklin College.
The Quakers (2-7) will face Baldwin-Wallace College (3-6) in the consolation game on Saturday at 1 p.m. Franklin (4-5) meets Aurora University (9-2) in the championship tilt at 3 p.m. Aurora beat Baldwin-Wallace 78-71 in Friday’s first contest.
Franklin made its first three shots and led 8-0 before the Quakers could get on the scoreboard when senior Nick Welsh (Muncie, IN/Wes-Del) found the basket with 18:08 left in the opening half.
Earlham was able to bounce back and fight its way into the contest. Junior Tristian Gregory (Evansville, IN/Harrison) scored to make it 14-12 at the 14:13 mark.
At the end of the first period, the Quakers had a chance to take the lead. Franklin led 33-32 in the final minute when the Quakers turned the ball over allowing the Grizzlies to score and lead 35-32 at intermission.
In the second half, Franklin pulled away and led by 12 points on several occasions. Earlham could only get to within seven at 57-50 when Gregory hit a pair of free throws with 6:23 remaining in the contest.
Gregory led the way for the Quakers with 26 points, while Welsh finished with 15 points.
Sophomore Justin Carter (Indianapolis, IN/Northwest) added eight points and senior Neil Collins (Ft. Wayne, IN/North) tossed in seven points. Sophomore Tarrell Berry (Indianapolis, IN/Northwest) pulled down seven rebounds to lead Earlham. Box score.
