2007 Season Preview

For Immediate Release:
Aug. 31, 2007

RICHMOND, Ind. Earlham College Head Coach Pat Thomas enters his 21st season with three of the top five runners returning from the squad that placed seventh in the North Coast Athletic Conference last fall.

Thomas looks to senior Dan Mahle (Boulder, CO/Shining Mountain Waldorf) to return to the form of his sophomore season and to the continued development of some of the younger runners to balance the loss of three-time All-NCAC performer and All-American steeplechaser, Walker Yane.

“We graduated a very outstanding front runner,” Thomas said. “But we have a core group of returning runners who have a great work ethic and have been getting better each year.  I worry about our lack of depth, but I think we can be a stronger team this fall.”

Mahle appears most capable of leading the Quakers.  A fantastic sophomore season, one in which he led Earlham in four meets before earning All-NCAC honors with a fifth-place finish, preceded a not-so-stellar campaign last fall.  Thomas expects Mahle to run well and looks to fellow senior Mark Boylan (Holliston, MA/Holliston), Earlham’s most improved and No. 2 runner in ’06, to continue his steady progression.

Two sophomores, Evan Fackler (Shelby, OH/Plymouth) and Adam Tobin (Weston, CT/Weston), should prove instrumental to the Quakers’ success.  Tobin was Earlham’s No. 4 runner and most outstanding newcomer last fall while Fackler demonstrated excellent progress during the track season. Junior James Haley (Bloomington, IN/South) has been a consistent scorer for two seasons and figures heavily in Earlham’s plans.

Among the first-years, Andrew Vedder (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) and Nathaniel Welch (Newburyport, MA/Newburyport), appear to be the most capable of adding to the Quakers’ chances for success in their initial year.

Earlham starts the season at the Franklin Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 1.
